RE: Call to Dancers working in the Healing Arts

LISTEN TO AUDIO NOTES HERE
www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfKDgPtSIyw

Are you a dancer involved in the Healing Arts in Canada? Would you like to meet other dance professionals to discuss where dance can move to further support health within our communities and how we can support one another to accomplish this?

Please join friends Miriam Schacter [founder of danceFIT danceABILITIES Canada and psychotherapist] and Twyla Kowalenko, MSW [Community Outreach Director of Dance Our Way Home] for a round table discussion and casual networking event in downtown Toronto. If you are located outside Toronto we will try to webcam or skype the evening.

For this initial meeting participants should have minimum of 2 years leadership experience in dance and healing arts. This includes physiotherapists, social workers, dance therapists, dance community workers and others who are already using dance in programming or outreach; however, later meetings promise to be wider in professional outreach and/or public interest.

Discussion topics so far include: personal meeting and introductions; talking about possible solo and joint ventures; research possibilities (medical, arts-based, blended methodologies); what we see in the communities and what is not being tended to; the state of dance-therapy in Canada; funds currently available to dancers in health or community projects; and what to do when a space-rental proves difficult. If you have topics you would like to see discussed at our first meeting, please let us know!

DATE: Sunday October 23rd
TIME: 5:30pm-7pm
LOCATION: Trinity St. Paul's Center 427 Bloor st. west of Spadina
ROOM: The Fireside room
COST: Free

Please feel free to contact miriam or twyla. It would be great if you could let us know you are coming and what you do. Please spread this link far and wide :)

Please also note that danceABILITIES Canada is looking for dance-volunteers to help with clients in class. See www.dancefitcanada.blogspot.com
Welcome to the beginning of a new relationship. This one is about dance, wellness, community, health, healing, collaborative medical research, arts-based initiatives and how all of these things combined allow many of us to live in complete, authentic, dynamic, expressive, expansive ways.

For us, dancing is speaking and feeling is hearing. Our hope is that individuals and collectives who are engaged in dance and dance-wellness can come here to share and draw from our quiet well of knowledge. We look forward to you touching base. Tell us what you do. sincerely Miriam and Twyla in Toronto. [Image 1: Martha Graham} [Image 2: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre]

danceABILITIES upTOWN and downTOWN

DanceFIT danceABILITIES Canada is pleased to announce our fall dance-wellness program. Each class is specifically choreographed for individuals with movement differences such as Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, MS, joint replacement, arthritis, cancer, stroke or if you use walkers, canes or wheels for mobility and balance. Feel free to register late, drop in, or try a class... it is never too late to dance

Classes are taught in seated and standing positions to embodied-melodies, enlivening-global beats, floor-defying funk and jazz-ripped rhythms. From Waltz to Musical Comedy to Disco, we “fire it and wire it” together, strengthening what we can in an atmosphere of authentic community fun.

Founder, Miriam Schacter, is a trained dance-fitness choreographer, neuro/trauma-oriented psychotherapist-in-supervision and teacher for Dancing with Parkinson's. With 3 years experience as a physiotherapy assistant in hospital and clinical settings, and the DWP teacher at the Center for Movement Disorders, Miriam is pleased to offer a much needed movement program committed to our communities, medical health research, and the arts.

Dancing with Parkinson's

A Toronto dance class designed by Sarah Robichaud for those living with Parkinson's Disease that increases awareness of the body in stillness and motion. Come celebrate the spontaneity of movement through dance and live music. No previous dance experience required.

Our mission at Dancing with Parkinson's (DWP) is to provide a fun, safe environment where those with Parkinson's Disease can celebrate the artistry and potential of their own movement. Classes are on now. See link for information. www.dancingwithparkinsons.com

Dancing with Parkinson's currently has three classes for Parkinson's Disease dancers in Toronto and the greater Toronto area. The classes are designed to work with every level and ability of Parkinson's Disease dancer.

DOWNTOWN LOCATION: Trinity-St Paul's United Church 427 Bloor Street West Toronto, ON M5S 1X7
Wednesdays 12:45-1:45 with Sarah, Miriam, Rachel, Nikki, Victoria, Lhara and amazing volunteers. Special dance teacher bow to new mom Nicole!

Please come early; wear a light running shoe with a flat sole; wear loose, comfortable clothing; bring water with you and remember to stay hydrated throughout the class;no previous dance experience is required

WHAT WE DO: Each class begins in a seated position to warm up the body. On the chairs we learn different pieces of choreography all designed to initiate movement and strengthen the muscles. For those who are able the choreography may appear as a standing dance piece later in the class.

Caregivers are welcome to attend the class if a dancer requires more personalised assistance. DWP would like to maximize the number of Parkinson's Disease dancers taking the class. It is NOT necessary to bring a dance partner with you. Our dance teachers are available to help and assist in any way they can.
